Recap: Revisiting June
Revisit June's feature stories in this month's roundup at 'The Neighborly.'
Despite the heat, humidity and long summer days, it’s been an adventuresome month here at The Neighborly and I’m extremely grateful for your readership and company. This is a reader- supported publication and nothing would be possible without your subscriptions. Thank you, once again, for reading the stories, liking, commenting, sharing, and learning more about the people, places and things I write about. If you’d like to suggest a topic or maybe an interesting individual in Palm Beach County or the state of Florida, please send me an email.
We’ve got a few exciting stories coming your way in July, so be on the lookout. But now it’s time for a quick revisit of this month’s stories.
May 30, 2023 → Flamingos and Me: Perspectives in Pink Aesthetics explores the color pink and its pivotal role in modern culture in addition to the natural world, most notably, in flamingos. Several original flamingo photographs are also part of the story and for your viewing pleasure. If you didn’t get a chance to read it or view the photography, click the link below.
June 1, 2023 → Special Edition: 'Living Fearlessly' with Author Susan Nefzger is an in-depth Q&A with Susan Nefzger about her recently published book, “A Practical Guide to Living Fearlessly.” Our discussion focuses in on the importance of discovering creative inspiration and we learn about her mission to help others live a more passionate, joyful life. June 2, 2023 → June ‘Photo of the Month’ is a photograph of a preening white egret titled ‘Bird Within a Dream.’ As an upgraded subscriber, you can receive a monthly digital download of the ‘Photo of the Month’ directly to your email. This file is large enough so that you can make any type of artwork, from fine art paper prints, metallic prints or even pillows. The options are endless. I can also send fine art prints directly to you, by mail, as another option to consider. For more images to view, check out my Instagram gallery.
June 7, 2023 → The Palm Beach County Squeeze is an investigative piece that explores some of the most recent challenges within the county such as rising rents, the premature cancelation of commercial leases, as well as changes in zoning laws and overdevelopment, creating, what some argue, unsustainable conditions. In this story, you’ll hear from a number of locals who have experienced these changes first hand and from those who are fighting back. To learn more about overdevelopment, overcrowding and rising rents in Palm Beach County, click the link below.
June 21, 2023 → A Place Called Chosen is about a town that no longer exists, once located on the western edge of Palm Beach County, along Lake Okeechobee. Chosen, a small farming community established in 1921, after the Everglades drainage project began and during the Florida land boom, was wiped off the map after a devastating hurricane in 1928. This was my favorite story to write and I can’t wait to travel out to these western communities again. If you haven’t yet read the story, this is one you do not want to miss.
The June summary prodded me to try to find the Nature episode I had told you about. Alas, all PBS shows are on a pay-to-view system. But I did find a show listing and the one I was thinking about was from October 1989. (God, how time has flown.) It was a three part series on Africa's Rift Valley. The titles are "The Great Rift: Footprints in the Valley", "The Great Rift: Out of the Ashes" and "The Great Rift: Breaking the Continent". I do not remember which on contained the flamingos.
There was an even earlier series on the Okavango Delta, again in Africa. If this link works, it is a short video you may enjoy.
