Amazing photographs and incredible information, Lara! Like you, I'm a tomboy when it comes to interests and ideas, but recently I've been embracing my feminine side with growing my hair, wearing more light-colored dresses, being more gentle and nurturing with my loved ones. And I feel powerful embracing this side.

Thanks for reading and commenting, I really liked what you have to say. It's so interesting how we associate colors with certain behaviors. And maybe those behaviors and associations and stereotypes are actually correct and maybe even a good thing. All I know is, pink was my least favorite color back in the day, now it's one of my favorite colors, and I love it in nature. Have a beautiful day.

For me as well. Interestingly, I had similar experience with the color palates. Now I can't get enough of earthy and soft and colorful hues. And nature is abundant of them! Thanks for this amazing essay and these amazing photographs. Much love and have a lovely day too!

"Pink, in all its brilliance and magnetism, is a force in nature. I’m regretful I didn’t see that sooner." Yes, but now we see it differently, and so off to zoo tomorrow to look at these creatures in a new way.

Three cheers on that, my friend. Indeed we do now see it all differently 🦩🦩🦩🦩

I remember the Nature Conservancy producing a PBS show called Nature. One episode was dedicated to flamingos. I particularly recall those that migrated through the Riff Valley in east Africa. They would feed in the shallow, alkaline lakes in the valley, which contributed much to their very dark, pink plumage. Their coordinated dance/march was an amazing sight. Thanks for this very nice post that brought forth this memory.

Yet, I can not picture you as having a yard full of pink, plastic flamingos.

I think I will look up that video. Maybe I can watch it myself. As far as plastic pink flamingos, I actually do have two nestled in my little front garden. Lol but I love the real flamingos much much better. 🦩🦩🦩🦩

The show may have actually been about the Rift Valley and the flamingos was a segment of it. I am sure this was fifteen or more years ago. Maybe not. Age does funny things to the Memory's filing system.

YouTube is quite effective when it comes to finding older videos, so I will do a search.

Wonderful piece and terrific photos. Love that color! I know Substack is for writers but I love photos and I wish more writers employed a liberal use of photographs like you...

Pink is pretty darn fantastic. Yes, this was more of a photo story, less heavy on text. There are a few great photography storytellers on here that I have found. But you have to go looking for them. Have a great week and thanks for reading!
