It’s the final day of May in this year of 2024. Are you ready for the hot summer ahead?
The photograph above is a moon image that I captured on April 20th of this year, so just over a month ago during its monthly lunar cycle. It’s a ‘Gibbosus’ moon when it is more than half illuminated but not quite all the way. This phase happens twice each month during the waxing gibbous phase and the waning gibbous phase. A waxing gibbous moon means it is growing larger, while a waning gibbous moon indicates a decrease is size.
The moon is one of my favorite objects to photograph. When it is visible and clouds are not obstructing it’s view, the moon commands the sky like a silent but all-knowing, omnipresent mystery. It is ancient. It has seen our earth transform over time and it will continue its illuminated reign, in partnership with the sun, long after we leave and billions of years into the future, before the sun decides it is game over.
This image is also going up as a 30x30 acrylic at the Kravis Center this summer for the new and spectacular space event, titled, SPACE EXPLORERS, THE INFINITE, AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE.
If you are in the South Florida area, and are a space fanatic like me, check out this event and take the entire family. It is immersive, out of this world and interactive. It will also be inside and we need that air conditioning.
As an upgraded subscriber, please feel free to download ‘Gibbosus from this page. Or I can send the file your way. It is also available as a 12x12 print with black mat. Please send me an email at lara.chapman@theneighborlyfl.com.
